Louisiana Teacher Certification Exams

Prospective teachers in Louisiana can use the Praxis exam(s) to receive their teacher certification. Below is a list of Praxis exams 240 can help you pass in Louisiana:

Louisiana Teacher Certification Requirements

To become a teacher in Louisiana, you must complete the follow steps:

Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

  • Teachers in Louisiana must hold, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree.
  • Those with graduate degrees are eligible for higher levels of certification and increased pay.

Student Teaching Requirements

  • Those who earn a degree in education will have a student teaching component integrated into their coursework.
  • Career-changers or students who majored in a subject outside of Education must also meet student teaching requirements prior to obtaining licensure as a Louisiana educator.

Pass Required Exams

  • Once a student’s degree and student teaching are complete, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) requires that they take a Praxis II examination.
  • These exams focus on the specific areas of licensure for which the individual seeks certification.

Apply for Certification

  • When the prospective teacher completes all the education requirements and successfully passes their Praxis exams, they may apply for certification.
  • In Louisiana, teacher certification involves three different levels. New teachers will apply for a Level 1 Professional Certificate, which is valid for three years. It can be renewed one time, at which point the teacher must begin working toward Level 2 or Level 3 certification.

Apply for Teaching Jobs

  • Once you have your teacher certification you can now start applying for jobs.
  • You can use job boards and search engines like Google to find open teacher positions in your area.

Alternative Pathways to Louisiana Teacher Certification

Three types of alternative teaching preparation programs allow professionals and recent college graduates to pursue a career in teaching:

  • The Practitioner Teacher Program is a streamlined certification path that combines intensive coursework and full-time teaching.
  • The Master’s Degree Program is an intensive path that results in a master’s degree as well as certification.
  • The Certification-Only Program is for individuals not wishing to participate full-time or pursue a master’s degree through one of the other alternate paths to certification.

Prerequisites of each alternative teaching preparation program differ, but each program type requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Since Praxis exams are required for state certification, these exams are part of the admission standards as well as the completion standards of alternate programs. A complete listing of the Louisiana Praxis/NTE exam requirements can be found here.Students can contact the College of Education or private program provider of choice for other information regarding admission standards.
