Wyoming Teacher Certification Requirements

To become a teacher in Wyoming, you must complete the follow steps:

Meet Education Requirements

  • To teach in Wyoming you must complete a state approved teacher preparation program.
  • You must complete the teacher preparation program with a degree in Education with a endorsement in a specific subjects area or areas.

Student Teaching Requirements

  • In Wyoming you are required to complete a minimum of eight consecutive weeks of student teaching in an accredited school setting.
  • The student teaching requirement is typically fulfilled during your teacher preparation program.

Pass Required Exams

  • Teachers must pass Praxis tests in their license area to obtain teaching certification in Wyoming.
  • Wyoming also requires you to complete two exams to show your knowledge of the U.S Constitution and the Wyoming Constitution.

Apply for Certification

  • Once you have completed your education requirements and passed your exams you can apply for certification Wyoming.

How to Receive Your Teacher Certification in Wyoming

It is mandatory for all teachers and administrators working in a Wyoming school district to hold a valid license that complies with the state law. The Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (PTSB) has set the bar high for teacher licensing and mandates that all educators must complete an approved teacher preparation program to qualify for a license to teach in a Wyoming school district. There are two pathways to obtain a teacher license in Wyoming.

Traditional Route

To receive your teacher certification in Wyoming through the traditional route, you must complete a state-approved teacher preparation program. These programs are usually offered by colleges and universities. The program you select must include student teaching and result in a degree in Education in a specific subject area. 

Alternative Route

If you received your teacher certification in another state through an alternative route you may qualify to teach in Wyoming. To qualify to teach in Wyoming under the alternative route, you must have been a teacher for 3 out of the 6 years you held a teaching license in your previous state. You will also need to meet the following requirements:

  • You will need to verify your teaching experience. You can verify your teaching experience through your previous school administrators.
  • You will need a copy of your current, valid teaching certification from your previous state.
  • You must submit your test scores for the required Praxis exams, or an equivalent exam from your previous state.
  • You must submit you finger prints and background check
  • You must have knowledge of the U.S and Wyoming constitutions.

  • Complete Registration: Follow instructions, provide necessary information, and pay exam fees online.
