Florida Teacher Certification Requirements

To become a teacher in Florida, you must complete the follow steps:

Earn a Bachelor’s Degree:

  • Obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • The degree should align with the subject or grade level you want to teach.

Student Teaching Experience

  • You must complete a state-approved student teaching experience program after your bachelor’s degree.

  • Visit the Florida Department of Education’s website and complete an online application for a teaching certificate.
  • The Florida Department of Education will review your application and determine if you meet all the state requirements for certification.

Alternative Routes for Florida Teacher Certification

In the case of individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated subject but now want to change careers, Florida’s Professional Development Certification Program helps prepare future educators through on-the-job training and competency-based evaluation.

Educators who completed their training out-of-state do not need to complete additional coursework. They will receive a temporary license while passing certification exams and demonstrating their teaching competencies.
