Ohio Teaching License Requirements

To become a teacher in Ohio, you must complete the follow steps:

Meet Education Requirements

  • Candidates need a bachelor’s degree in an approved educator preparation discipline, such as a bachelor’s in education.
  • Ohio offers several educator licenses for experienced professionals, which may not feature the same educational prerequisites.

Pass Required Exams

  • The first of the requirements is to pass the Ohio Assessments for Educators exam series.
  • The second requirement is the national Praxis exam for specific subject content and specializations.

Pass Background Check

  • Another requirement to become a teacher in Ohio is passing both a state and national background check.
  • Once the check is complete, the Ohio Department of Education determines whether you can receive your teaching license.

Apply for Certification

  • This is equivalent to an initial teaching license in other states and allows you to teach for up to four academic years before you get a new teaching license.
  • You apply for your license at the Ohio Department of Education website.

Apply for Teaching Jobs

  • Once you’ve found some school districts where you want to teach, you can start applications for those districts.
  • The application process may vary for each district, but having information such as your transcripts, teaching license, resume and a cover letter for each district can help you get the position you want.
