How to use practice tests to study for your exam
The OAE exams are designed to assess the knowledge and skills of prospective teachers in Ohio. In order to obtain a teaching certificate in Ohio you must pass an OAE exam. Using practice tests to prepare for the exam is a great way to identify your strengths and weaknesses, and to help you develop an effective study plan.
Here are a few ways to to get the most out of a practice test:
Find high-quality practice tests
Start by looking for practice tests that are specifically designed for and closely aligned to the OAE teacher certification exam you plan to take. At 240 Tutoring, we make every effort to align practice tests and study material to the most recent version of the exam.
Taking the practice test
Try to simulate the test day environment to get the most accurate assessment of your starting point. Take the practice test in a quiet environment, without any distractions. Try to simulate the actual testing conditions as closely as possible, including the time limit.
Analyze your results
Once you have completed the practice test, review your results carefully. Identify the areas where you performed well and the areas where you need to improve. We provide a graded rubric at the end of every practice test along with a report of where you performed well and where you need improvement.
Develop a study plan
Use your practice test results to develop a study plan that focuses on the content areas where you need the most improvement. Create a consistent practice schedule with dedicated time to study for your exams.
Study content areas where you are weakest
When studying, focus on the content areas that you struggled with the most during the practice test AND will be covered significantly on the OAE exam. This method will keep your time and effort spent on the content areas most likely to improve your score. At the end of every practice test we develop a custom study plan for you based on 1) the test you are taking and 2) your results on the practice test.
Take an additional practice test
After you have followed the study guide and feel prepared, take an additional practice exam to evaluate your progress. Ensure you don’t take the same practice test and that the questions vary from your first attempt. Use your new results to adjust your study plan as needed. 240 Tutoring provides three full-length practice tests and your initial practice test to help you prepare for your exam.
These steps will help you get the most out of your practice test. You can use our OAE practice tests to identify your strengths and weaknesses, develop an effective study plan and reassess your progress as you prepare for your exams.
