Non-Traditional Paths for Hawaii Teacher Certification

The Alternative Licensing Program (ALP) is designed to validate the teacher performance of current Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) and Hawaii State Public Charter School (HIPCS) employees who do not have but would like to obtain an initial teacher license. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Have an earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in a HIDOE or HIPCS classroom setting. (long-term sub, emergency hire, educational assistant, part-time teacher, etc.) OR have the opportunity to be hired within the HIDOE or HIPCS in a position. (long-term sub, emergency hire, educational assistant, part-time teacher, etc.)

You can follow the following steps to register for your teacher certification exams:

  • Identify Your Exams: Determine the specific teacher certification exams you need to take. If you are a part of a certification program you should talk to your program advisor to determine which exams you need to take.
  • Create an Account: Visit the official testing service website and create an account.
  • Select Exam and Date: Login, choose your exam, and select a convenient test date and location.
  • Complete Registration: Follow instructions, provide necessary information, and pay exam fees online.
