Illinois Teaching License Requirements

To become a teacher in Illinois, you must complete the follow steps:

Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

  • Illinois teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree to qualify for a teaching license.
  • The state accepts bachelor’s degrees in any major, though teachers often earn their bachelor’s in Education.

Complete an EPP

  • These programs must include coursework on methods of teaching exceptional children, reading methods, reading specific content areas, and methods of teaching English learners.
  • Completing this step is required to become a teacher in Michigan.

Gain Student Teaching Experience

  • Illinois requires student teaching experience for a teaching license.
  • Candidates must complete student teaching in their final year of an educator preparation program.

Pass Required Certification Tests

  • Teachers must pass two required certification tests to earn their teaching certification in Illinois.
  • Teaching licensure candidates must take 1) the content tests for their subject area and 2) undergo a teacher performance assessment (edTPA).

Apply for Certification

  • Your university or alternative certification program will help you apply for teacher certification in Illinois.
  • Only apply for certification once you have met all of the ISBE requirements.

Non-Traditional Paths for Illinois Teacher License

As long as you hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, you can transition into teaching through the alternative pathway program. You must have completed at least 9 semester hours of coursework in the licensure content area sought (e.g. Mathematics)​. You must also complete a year as a supervised teacher. You must also complete an educator preparation program.
