Understanding The Structure Of The OAE

Blackboard Teaching vectors

The Ohio assessments for educators (OAE) is an exam series required for new teacher candidates in Ohio. In the following article we will discuss the general structure of OAE and break down several key exams from both the content-area and pedagogical assessments. We will discuss the kinds of questions that are on the OAE, how many questions there are, and the difference between essay and constructed response questions. Finally, we will offer you some reliable study resources so that you can go into test day with confidence.

Ready? Let’s get started!

How many questions are on the OAE?

The OAE includes both pedagogical and content-area assessments. Different assessments may have different numbers of questions. The four pedagogical assessments each have 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 constructed-response questions. The Foundations of Reading (090) assessment also has 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 written assignments. In general, the content-area assessments have 100 to 150 multiple-choice questions. A summary of the number of questions for different exams can be found by clicking on the exam at the Ohio Assessments for Educators website.

What kinds of questions are on the OAE?

Most questions on the OAE are multiple-choice questions, in which you may occasionally need to use information from a passage, an image, or a graph. Make sure to practice different types of multiple-choice questions before the test.

Some exams, including all four pedagogical assessments, also include constructed-response questions (CRQs). CRQs are open-ended questions, and there are several main types that appear on the OAE. For example, a case study CRQ will ask you to evaluate and respond to a given situation, and a work product CRQ tests the appropriate professional response to a problem in a school. No matter which type of CRQ is on the test, it is important to thoroughly read the instructions and plan a response before writing an answer.

Are there any essay questions on the OAE?

The OAE does not include questions that require long essay responses. Responses to CRQ questions are generally 100 to 200 words or one to two paragraphs. Even though you will be writing short answers rather than essay responses, it is still important to make sure all written responses are on topic, are well structured, and use correct grammar.

What are the best resources for studying for the OAE?

The best resources for studying for the OAE include test information, study guides, and practice problems. Test information for the OAE, including rules, scoring, and structure, can be found on each test page at the Ohio Assessments for Educators website and right here at 240 Tutoring. 240 Tutoring also offers engaging study guides and numerous practice problems that are written to mimic OAE structure and content.
