For computer-based testing at a test center, you may register to take 1 or all 3 subtests in a single test session. For testing remotely via online proctoring, subtests are administered in separate testing sessions. You must register for each subtest separately.

Exam Overview

The Language and Language Development (031) exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and one written essay. You will have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete this test. The multiple-choice questions cover the following skill areas:

What to Bring

To take the CTEL, you must present an originalgovernment-issuedvalid (non-expired) identification that has your photograph, full name, and signature. Make sure to bring the ID with you on the day of the test to the testing center. For most test-takers, a valid driver’s license or United States Passport is a valid ID.

Dates and Locations

By appointment, year-round, Monday through Saturday (excluding some holidays). Test appointments are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and seating is limited. You can check for availability appointments here.

Scoring

To pass the Language and Language Development (031) test, you must receive a scaled score of at least 220.

You may take restroom breaks during testing. Time taken for breaks is considered part of the available testing time.

How do I pass the CTEL 1: Language and Language Development test?

To pass the CTEL 1: Language and Language Development exam, you must first understand what is on the exam and what you will be expected to know. Once you identify areas of weakness, you can begin targeting those areas with instructional content and practice questions.

How long will the Language and Language Development exam take me?

The full test takes 1 hour 45 minutes, but expect to be at the testing site longer. Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment time to get checked in.

When when I receive my CTEL 1 test results?

CTEL test results are available within 5 weeks of testing. You will receive a receipt of completion at the conclusion of their test center appointment.

Can I take the CTEL 1: Language and Language Development exam remotely?

Online proctoring is available for the CTEL exams meaning you can take the test from home or another remote location. Read more about remote testing here.
