If I could swap roles with a teacher for a day, I’d choose to teach kindergarten. Not only would I get to witness the pure excitement kids have for learning, but I’d also have a valid excuse to rock those awesome macaroni art necklaces.

Computer Science because it takes concepts from chemistry, physics, and math and builds abstractions upon them, allowing us to create digital representations of structures that exist only in nature.

“If you have time to lean, you have time to clean.” This sounds silly, but when I was working McDonalds at 14, my manager said this on repeat and while jobs along the way didn’t necessarily have a space to lean or clean, the concept of working hard and always going above stemmed from there for me.

If you could go back and take any class again, which one would it be?

In high school, I took Facing History and Ourselves, a class that explored major historical events through the perspectives of those who lived them. It profoundly shaped how I see myself, others, and the world a defining moment in my life. Shoutout to Coach Wood!

I’d love to retake all of my chemistry classes. They were so difficult the first time, but after teaching Biology for years I think I’d do so much better the second time around.

Who was your favorite teacher growing up?

Mr. Neil Smith, my high school band director, was more than a teacher he was a mentor who pushed us to excel while genuinely caring for us. Through his leadership, I learned discipline, teamwork, and accountability skills that still impact me today. Some of my best memories come from winning the 2A State Championship under his direction.

Mr. Fry, my Ag teacher, saw something in me before I did. He pushed me beyond my comfort zone, leading me to unexpected experiences—like raising and showing goats in FFA! Mr. Cleveland and Ms. Haubry! You left every interaction with Mr. Cleveland better than you came in. He spoke my language (sarcasm), had high expectations, pushed us to be the best versions of ourselves, and came to student extra-curricular activities or performances! Ms. Haubry was one of the best piano instructors I ever had and was fiercely supportive of her students in the quietest of ways.

I would go back and take AP Environmental Science again. Not only did I have the BEST teacher for this course in high school, but this course was really eye-opening as we learned about our environment and what is going on around us. I enjoyed learning about real-world environmental issues, solutions, and how pieces of the environment around us work and interact together. As an adult, I often reflect on things I learned in that class many years ago and would love to revisit the course to see what new things I might learn from it now!

Science, specifically chemistry, was my favorite subject in school. I had an incredible teacher, Mr. Bouyer, who made every lesson engaging, hands-on, and fun. His passion for the subject inspired me to think critically and stay curious about how the world works. He even had a section where we’d perform cool experiments in front of the elementary students that he called “Chem-Magic.” He was like a real life Hogwarts professor!

My favorite motivational quote comes from the book Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller: “Sometimes you have to watch somebody love something before you can love it yourself.” I love this quote because it captures the powerful influence that passionate teachers, leaders, and mentors can have on our lives. When someone genuinely loves what they do, that passion is contagious. It inspires us to care, to grow, and to strive for more. It’s a reminder of the kind of impact we can have on others when we lead with purpose and heart.

CTE Teaching and Learning at the high school level I’ve always wanted to be a teacher who helps future teachers. As a high school student, I had the opportunity to take this CTE class, and it played a big role in shaping me into the educator I am today!
