Are you trying to figure out which Indiana CORE exams you need to take? If so, this article is for you.

The Indiana CORE test is used to certify teachers in the state of Indiana. Before you register, you will need to find out which test is required for the class you want to teach. You may be surprised to find out that in order to teach some subjects, teachers need to take more than one test to be fully certified. So read on if you want to know more about the Indiana CORE.

Are you ready to learn? Let’s get started.

What is the Indiana CORE?

The Indiana CORE test is designed to assess the knowledge of educators and ensure that they are qualified to teach a particular subject. Teachers must pass a content area test and a pedagogy test. Some tests cannot be taken until an educator preparation program is completed.

Who has to take the Indiana CORE?

All public educators in Indiana must take and pass an Indiana CORE exam. Some private schools may require their teachers to have passed a test as well; however, this is a decision made by each private school.

It is important to note that in years past, prospective teachers seeking entry into an Indiana Educator Preparation Program (EPP) were required to take and pass a basic skills exam called CASA. As of July 1, 2019, the CASA is no longer required.

What Indiana CORE test do I have to take?

The Indiana CORE test you need to take depends upon what you want to teach. Early childhood and elementary teachers must take an exam that covers all subjects, like the Early Childhood Generalist or the Elementary Education Generalist. Middle school and high school teachers take subject-specific tests like Middle School Mathematics or Mathematics. There are other content assessments like Art, Reading, and Physical Education that are for teachers teaching preschool through twelfth grade. The Indiana CORE assessments website provides a complete list of the possible teaching licenses and their required content area assessments, but the table below provides some examples for some of the more common CORE exams.

In addition to passing your content test, you will also need to take a pedagogy test to demonstrate your knowledge of typical students and best teaching practices. You must take the pedagogy test that coincides with the grade level(s) you will teach.
