What is the FTCE?

FTCE stands for Florida Teacher Certification Examinations. These exams test your skills, content knowledge, and pedagogical knowledge that are required to be a public school teacher in Florida. Pearson creates and administers these exams. All the exams include multiple-choice questions, but some also have an essay portion. If you’re feeling particularly nervous about the essay portion, take a look at 240 Tutoring’s guidance for constructed-response questions.

Who has to take the FTCE?

Anyone who wants to be a teacher in Florida needs to take at least one of these exams. Most people will need to take more than one. All teachers must take the General Knowledge (GK) exam and the Professional Education exam or demonstrate general knowledge and professional preparation by other means. Depending on the grade level you will teach, there will be at least one other test you need to take. We will cover those below.

What FTCE test do I have to take?

Once you have submitted your application for certification, the Bureau of Educator Certification will tell you which exams to take. Generally, all teachers must take the General Knowledge exam and the Professional Education exam. The General Knowledge exam tests basic English, reading, and math content. Even if you are not teaching one of these subjects, the state of Florida believes you should have this knowledge. The exam is broken into four subtests:

  • Essay Subtest (825)
  • English Language Skills (ELS) Subtest (826)
  • Reading Subtest (827)
  • Mathematics Subtest (828)

You can register to take all four exams together or you can take them separately. One subtest costs $32.50 to take, two subtests are $65, three subtests are $97.50, and all four subtests are $130. The exam consists of one essay and a total of 120 multiple-choice questions: the ELS subtest, reading subtest, and mathematics subtest each have 40 multiple-choice questions.

A passing score on the essay is at least 8 out of 12 points. A scaled score of at least 200 per subtest is passing for the multiple-choice sections. If you need to retake the exam or part of the exam, there is a 31-day waiting period. You only need to register for and retake the subtest(s) you didn’t pass.

The Professional Education Test (083) is the other exam all teachers must take. This exam covers your knowledge of pedagogical and professional practices and consists of 110 multiple-choice questions, and you have 2 hours and 30 minutes to finish. The test fee is $150.

A scaled score of at least 200 is needed to pass. There is a 31-day waiting period to retake the exam.

If you fail one subtest, you fail the whole exam. You can register to retake any number of subtests or the entire exam. There is a 31-day waiting period before retaking any part of the exam. The fees to retake the subtest are $37.50 for one subtest, $75 for two subtests, $112.50 for three subtests, and $150 for the full exam.
