Blackboard Teaching vectors

Are you getting ready to register for a Praxis® exam? You might have questions like these:

  • How do you register for a Praxis® test?
  • How much does each test cost?
  • Are there any registration details you need to know?
  • Do you need an ID to take the test? What kind of ID?
  • Do you get to use a formula sheet or calculator?
  • What happens if you fail? How many times will you be able to retake an exam?

If you have any of these questions about registering for the Praxis®, you’re in luck! We’re here to help you get ready by answering your questions. We’ll go over all of the logistics.

So, let’s get started!

How do you register for a Praxis® exam?

If you are in the United States there are three ways you can register for a Praxis® exam. We’ll give you step-by-step directions on how to register online, by phone, or by mail.

When registering online you’ll need to sign in to your Praxis® account. You can create an account if you don’t already have one. Follow the steps to choose your exam, date, and testing location. You’ll then be prompted to pay with a credit/debit card. Once you have registered for an exam, it is recommended that you print a hard copy of your admission ticket to show the test center personnel if asked.

Registering by phone will cost you an extra $35. You must already have a Praxis® account to register by phone. Call ETS at 1-800-772-9476. ETS is available Monday–Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET. You must contact ETS at least four days before the day you want to test.

Mail-in registration can take up to three weeks. Complete the Test Authorization Voucher Request Form (PDF) and mail it to ETS. Refer to the code lists to fill out your form. Once your request is processed you will receive a voucher number in the mail with instructions on how to register. Once you have registered for the Praxis® exam, it is recommended that you print a hard copy of your admission ticket to show the test center personnel if asked.

The easiest (and quickest) registration process is the online option.

More information on registering for a Praxis® exam can be found on the ETS website. There is also specific information on how to register for an exam internationally.

How much does it cost to register for a Praxis® exam?

When registering for an exam it is important to understand all of the costs you may incur.

More information about the cost of Praxis exams can be found in this article from 240 Tutoring.

Specific testing fees for each exam can be found on the ETS website.

Do you need an ID to take a Praxis® exam?

Knowing what to bring on test day is important. You want to make sure you bring a valid form of ID with you when taking a Praxis® exam.

The name on your ID must match the name you used to register for your exam.

If your name has changed since you registered for your exam, you will need to follow the steps to create a new account if you do not have an ID that matches your new name.

More information about your ID can be found on the ETS website.

What kind of ID do you need for a Praxis® test?

You want to make sure you’re prepared the day of your Praxis® exam, and being prepared means knowing what kind of ID you need to bring.

You must have a valid ID to be permitted to take a Praxis® exam. No copies will be accepted.

Valid forms of ID include a passport, passport card (United States only — must be accompanied by valid supplemental ID), driver’s license, state or province ID, national ID, or military ID. All identification must include your name, photograph, and signature.

More information about your ID can be found on the ETS website.

What are some day-of-test tips for a Praxis® test?

Nothing is more frustrating than forgetting something on the day of your exam. Let’s look at some day-of-test tips to help you!

Plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your testing appointment.

Make sure you have printed your admission ticket and double-checked your testing location. You also want to make sure you have your ID ready since you will not be able to take your exam without a valid ID.

Check to see if you are permitted to bring a calculator to use on your exam. (See the discussion of calculators below.)

Bring a light jacket or sweater in case it is cold in the testing center.

More day-of-test tips can be found on the ETS website and in this video from 240Tutoring.

Can you use a formula sheet on a Praxis® exam?

Some certification tests allow you to use a formula sheet on the exam. The formula sheet is provided on the day of the exam and will be clearly identified in the testing information.

Some Science and Mathematics Praxis® exams provide formula sheets to use on the day of the exam. When taking your exam, you’ll click the help button and click on the tab for the reference sheet to access it. When you watch the tutorial before your exam begins, it will give you more information on how to access the formula sheet, often referred to as a reference sheet.

Can you use a calculator on a Praxis® exam?

Hopefully, we have answered most of your Praxis® registration questions. We’ll go over a few other registration details you should know before you register for your exam.

If you are currently enrolled in college and are receiving financial aid you could be eligible for a fee waiver. You will need to show a current FAFSA Report showing an EFC (Expected Family Contribution) of less than $3,000. If you meet these eligibility qualifications you can apply on the ETS website.

If you need to cancel or make changes to your exam you can do that online or over the phone. The deadline to cancel or make changes to your exam is three days before your testing appointment.

To change or cancel, log in to your Praxis® account and process the change online or contact ETS by phone at 1-800-772-9476. There is a $40 change fee and you’ll only receive a 50 percent refund of your testing fee if you cancel your exam.

We hope that we were able to answer all your Praxis® registration questions and that you now feel prepared to register for your exam!
