Are you getting ready to take the MTEL? Understanding the test structure will help you to better understand what kinds of questions will be on the exam to get a better idea of how you should study. How many questions are on the MTEL?

It’s important to understand the test structure before you take your MTEL exam. We’ll give you some insight into how many questions are on each exam.

Most MTEL exams have a combination of selected-response questions and constructed-response questions. Each exam has approximately 100 multiple-choice and 2 open-response questions.

The Bilingual exam includes only selected-response questions.

The Chinese (Mandarin), German, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian exams have 55 multiple-choice and short-answer items and 4 open-response assignments (one of which requires an oral response).

The Spanish and French exams have 100 multiple-choice questions and 2 open-response assignments (one of which requires an oral response).

The Communication and Literacy Skills exam has 35 multiple-choice questions, 7 short-answer sentence correction items, and 2 open-response assignments.

The General Curriculum Mathematics subtest has 45 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-response assignment. The General Curriculum Multi-subject subtest has 55 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-response assignment.

The Sheltered English Immersion exam has 60 multiple-choice items and 1 open-response assignment consisting of five tasks.

What kinds of questions are on the MTEL?

MTEL exams have a combination of selected-response and constructed-response questions.

Selected-response questions are multiple-choice questions. You will choose one correct answer out of a list of possible answers.

Another name for essay questions is open-response questions.

There are open-response questions on every MTEL exam except for the Bilingual exam.
